Help! My cat loosing his hair!!!?

My cat Cleo began loosing his hair 2 months ago. Although he's an indoor cat, I think this began because of a flea infestation he got from a sneak-out. We got rid of the flea problem over a month ago, but the hair loss has only gotten worse. Now he has lost most of the hair on his lower back, back legs, tail and small patches on his front legs. There are'nt any rough patches or irratation, so I don't think he has ringworm. He is a very happy cat otherwise. We took him to the vet, they thought it might be flea allergies, so they gave him a cortizone shot which had no effect. Then they suggested changing his diet and not giving him dry food, which we are trying, but dose not seem to be helping the situation at all. The vet also said he might be an obsessive -licker and offered up some kitty prozac that we would like to avoid. So... now I am at a loss for what to do with my balding Cleo. Has anyone ever found a fix for this? Please Help!! Before I have to knit him a kitty sweater!

Have they done skin scrapings? Looked at anything under a microscope? Taken some hair and done a dermatophyte culture? Skin biopsies? At least some bloodwork?

Any or all of these diagnostic tests should be run for Cleo. Find a vet who will look into what is going on internally and externally. Or get a referral to a veterinary dermatologist. That may be pricey, but they have the in-depth knowledge to find out exactly what is going on with your kitty.

Good luck!

If he is indeed obsessively licking you may want to try some calming herbal treats that you can buy at Petsmart--they will have as the main ingredient Chamomeile and L-tryptophan which should calm your cat and make him a little sleepy you can give it about a half a hour before the time when he begins itching the most it will take about 2 weeks before you see any difference in the hair loss if this solves the problem. If he is itching because of an allergy they make feline hypoallergenic diets you could try this it may help it will take about 4-6 weeks for results.

You may want to have your vet refer you to a veterinary dermatologist.

Good luck!

I had an obsessive licker. I tried drugs, baths, etc to no avail. She was officially diagnosed as "neurotic." I tried to minimize her stress level and it got somewhat better. I basically got used to having a semi-bald kitty.
