Advice needed about a hair product (read details since more words can fit there)....?

Ok I had a little bit of a condition (called alopecia areata) where I lost a patch of hair at the crown of my head %26amp; right now it's growing back extremely slow. It's kinda long but still short enough that it spikes up. Does anyone know of a good but not too expensive product (pomade, gel, etc) I can use to smooth it down that will NOT make my hair look like I haven't washed it in 2 days?? I've tried quite a few things (including hairspray or bedhead, got 2 b %26amp; citre shine brand pomades) %26amp; even if I use a little it still makes my hair look nasty in that area....

I like Garnier Fructis' soft curl cream. It's like a pomade. Pantene makes a really good pomade as well. If you use them sparingly they work great and don't make your hair look greasy.

the trick with hairspray is.... you spray it on your comb and run it through your hair from top to bottom and it keeps down flyaway hairs. You repeat until it works okay and it shouldn't make your hair look greasy and gross since you are using a little bit of it.
