What is the best way to color hair..should I go to a salon, first for help?

I have been thinking off and on about coloring my hair...I want to lighten it actually..so can they do this for dark brown hair which is more black than brown...in parts and also I have some grey which I wouldn't mind "losing" LOL!

What would be a good thing to do for me ? and how would I know when I have a great salon or not? What should I be looking for, with hairsalons...please advise!

It sounds like you want to lighten your hair and conceal any gray. I would go to a salon and ask for a weave. They can make the color more dimensional than you would be able to do on your own at home. I picked my stylist by going to a major chain salon (in my case, Regis, but there are other good ones, like Carlton for example) and then either make time for a consultation (keep it under 5 minutes and most will do it for free) or do what I do and just make an appointment and get it done. The best thing about chains is that they usually have very experienced hairdressers that are generally not so arrogant to do whatever they feel like doing. Be aware that for dark brown hair it has to process down a lot, so expect to spend at least two hours at the salon! Good luck!

I used to color my hair at home--and it fried my hair, and I had a few bad experiences. So I decided it was better for me to go to the salon, it is a bit more expensive but it is totally worth. The color also seems to last longer and it will be more likely to come out closer to the color that you want.

take this from me do not use anything from like cvs because it the opposite color your expecting so go to a hair salon and tell them what u want they wont mess it up because they are highly trained professionals so dont worry about it

Hair does not color lighter, it only colors darker. You can high light it, but if you do a full application it will turn out sloppy trying to lighten dark hair. Definitely go to a salon, do not do it at home. I actually suggest going to a cosmetology college rather than a salon, for one it's cheaper, and they also have the best professionals looking over the student's shoulder, and the teachers can fix anything. If you want to fully lighten all your hair, they'll bleach it first and then color it with whichever color you choose.

Do not try and attempt to lighten your hair at home. Go to a salon and ask them their advice on what you are trying to achieve.... a great salon will listen to what you want and give realistic feedback.
